Susan Munro is a partner based in the Hong Kong office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP and a member of the firm’s International Arbitration, Investigations and White-Collar Crime and International Trade and Regulatory Compliance Groups.
Ms. Munro has more than 25 years’ experience of advising financial institutions, multinational companies and investment funds on China-related investments, regulatory compliance, investigations and commercial disputes. She regularly advises and represents clients in China, including the Hong Kong SAR, the U.K., the U.S. and other jurisdictions.
Ms. Munro has led various internal investigations in connection with anti-corruption, fraud and sexual harassment allegations and has participated in numerous U.S. SEC investigations conducted in mainland China and elsewhere in Asia. She has assisted multinational companies with regulatory compliance assessments and has structured compliance programs for clients in the financial services, engineering and architectural services, and pharmaceuticals and medical devices sectors. Ms. Munro has advised global investment funds on compliance due diligence, investment risks and remediation. She represents clients in litigation and arbitration in connection with complex cross-border shareholder disputes in various jurisdictions.
Ms. Munro was educated in England, Hong Kong and Shanghai and is a solicitor qualified in England & Wales. She speaks, reads and writes Chinese to near-native level and is fluent in French and Spanish. After graduating in Chinese from the University of London, she pursued post-graduate studies at Fudan University in Shanghai as a British Council Scholar. Ms. Munro also obtained a LLB degree, trained at the Inns of Court School of Law in London, and was called to the Bar of England & Wales and to the Bar of the Hong Kong SAR. She has been ranked by Chambers Global and Asia Pacific in Corporate Investigations/Anti-Corruption every year since 2015. In 2015 Ms. Munro was named Regulatory and Compliance Lawyer of the Year by China Law & Practice.
Manjula’s was one of the first handful of lawyers who chose to become a corporate lawyer and advise on cross-border transactions soon after the liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991. Since the early years of liberalization, she has assisted many multinational corporations (including Fortune 500 companies) in establishing their presence in India in a variety of sectors including automobiles, aviation, biotechnology, chemicals, energy, financial services, F&B, healthcare & pharma, information technology and outsourcing, oil and gas, ports, transportation and telecommunications. She has counselled and represented various clients in numerous mergers and acquisitions, buy- outs and other corporate transactions in these sectors.
She advises her clients on a wide range of laws involving anti‐corruption, competition law, corporate governance, general corporate advice, exchange control laws, data privacy and protection of personal information, labour and employment and real estate. She has also been involved in several complex litigation and arbitration matters arising out of commercial and cross border transactions. She is actively involved in rendering probono legal advice to international and foreign non-profit organizations in relation to their activities in India furthering social causes.
Manjula’s commitment to her clients and consistent delivery of high-quality services has been recognized by her clients and peers. She was awarded the National Law Day Award – 2000 by the Union Law Minister for “excellence in corporate law” and for “unique contribution in bringing foreign exchange into India”. She featured in the recently published “100 Legal Luminaries of India” which throws light on some of the most illustrious legal minds in India. Among various accolades, she has been recognised as the ‘Corporate Governance Lawyer of the Year’ at the Women in Business Law Awards 2021, Asia by Euromoney Legal Media Group, ALB India Super 50 Lawyers 2021 by Asian Legal Business and one of the Most Promising Women Leaders 2021 by The Economic Times.
Shannon Rajan is a disputes partner in the Infrastructure, Construction and Engineering practice and co-heads of the Occupational, Safety and Health practice in Skrine.
His practice has evolved to include key sectors in environmental and occupational, health and safety matters. He advises domestic and multi-national corporations on all aspects of ESH compliance and dealings with/investigations by the Department of Environment and Department of Occupational Safety and Health. He has been involved in defending complex ESH litigation and enforcement actions in civil and criminal courts and statutory appeals board. He has vast experience in crisis management and dealing with the immediate aftermath of incidents involving fatalities, serious personal injuries, or significant environmental damage.
Shannon has experience of the entire range of dispute resolution processes including litigation, arbitration, adjudication, mediation, and bespoke processes. He is qualified as an advocate and solicitor in the High Court of Malaya, and an accredited arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator who sits on the panel of the AIAC (formerly KLRCA), THAC, HKIAC, MMC, SIMI and SMC. He has regularly served as a sole arbitrator and acted as counsel under UNCITRAL, SIAC, AIAC and PAM rules and pure ad-hoc cases.
Mr. Shi joined JunHe in 2004 and practices out of our Beijing office. His practice mainly focuses on corporate and commercial law, including international and domestic investment, M&A, reorganization, corporate compliance and antitrust. He has also gained extensive experience in mineral resources, agricultural food, rail transit, retail, electronic commerce and PE investment.
Mr. Shi services many prestigious domestic and foreign companies, investment institutions, banks and financial institutions, covering a wide range of legal business such as domestic and foreign investment, financing, securities listing, M&A, corporate compliance and antitrust. Mr. Shi represents his clients in project structure design, equity or asset acquisition, corporate reorganization, overseas funding and listing, assisting in negotiations of many significant transactions, as well as drafting and implementing legal documents.
